Questions

Why do I have two tarot birth cards?

You have a personality card, which shows how you act and how other people see you, and a soul card, which shows what you want deep down. Your personality card is how your soul card shows up in daily life. Both come from your birth date. We add up its numbers and reduce the total, as How to calculate tarot birth cards explains below. That gives you a two-digit personality card, from 10 to 21, and a single-digit soul card, from 1 to 9. The names come from tarot author Mary Greer.

Why do I have three birth cards?

You have three birth cards when the numbers in your birth date come to 19, because the digits of 19 can be added together twice: 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. That gives you The Sun (19), the Wheel of Fortune (10), and The Magician (1). Two-digit cards are personality cards, and single-digit cards are soul cards. So The Sun and the Wheel of Fortune are both personality cards, and The Magician is your soul card. The common ways of adding up a birth date all give three cards for 19.

Why do different calculators give different results?

Calculators add up your birth date in different ways, and none is the official one. Mary Greer was the first to publish a method, in 1984. Her full-year method adds the whole year to the month and day. The split-year method, which most big calculator sites use and we use, splits the year in two. For January 2, 1990, Greer's method gives 1 + 2 + 1990 = 1993, then 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22, which she counts as The Fool with The Emperor, while ours gives Death with The Emperor. The soul card's number stays the same either way. Only the personality card can differ.

How to calculate tarot birth cards

Add your birth month, day, and year split in two, then reduce the total (add its parts together) to 21 or less. To reduce, split a three-digit total into its first two digits and last digit, add the digits of a two-digit total over 22, and turn 22 into 4. Two digits are your personality card, and their sum is your soul card. For January 2, 1990: 1 + 2 + 19 + 90 = 112, then 11 + 2 = 13, Death, and 1 + 3 = 4, The Emperor. A single digit is your soul card, and adding 9 gives your personality card (8 + 9 = 17). And 19 gives three cards (19 → 10 → 1).

How are birth cards different from year cards or zodiac tarot cards?

Your birth cards come from your full birth date and stay the same all your life, while a year card changes every year and a zodiac tarot card comes from your zodiac sign. A year card adds your birth month and day to the year you want to look at, so each year brings a new card with a new theme. A zodiac tarot card needs no math. In the late 1800s, a British secret society called the Golden Dawn matched each of the 12 signs to one card. Your sign's card is usually different from your birth cards.

Why don't I have The Fool?

The Fool is card number 0, and the split-year method we use doesn't count it as a birth card, so birth cards come from cards 1 to 21. If you end up with 22, we add its digits: 2 + 2 = 4, The Emperor. Like any single digit, 4 gets a partner card, 4 + 9 = 13, Death. Mary Greer's full-year method works differently. It counts 22 as The Fool and pairs it with The Emperor.
